Knowledge base:
There is no industry standard for determining the UVB percentage, although many companies still use this parameter to promote their lamps. This is a common method for "rating" tanning lamps, but as a ratio, it is insufficient to assess the tanning power or effectiveness of a particular lamp. Essentially, it is not an accurate measure of actual performance.
Above is a simple chart showing two lamps. Both deliver the same amount of UVB, but very different amounts of UVA.
If we look only at the UVB% values, Lamp 1 with its higher UVB/UVA ratio might be considered the stronger, more effective lamp. This, however, is not true, as Lamp 2 has a lower UVB ratio because it emits more UVA.
An effective tanning lamp must have a well-balanced spectrum of UV light, delivering both UVA and UVB in the required amounts to achieve the desired effect. Adding more UVB usually results in a "redder" lamp rather than a better "tanning" lamp.
Every tanning lamp needs just enough UVB to stimulate melanin production and plenty of UVA to oxidize it and turn it brown. When using lamps that generate more UVB, it is recommended to keep exposure times quite short, as the risk of skin reddening is higher.
Through extensive research, Wolff System has developed unique phosphor blends to produce high-quality tanning lamps that are reliable and profitable for professional salons and can deliver excellent tanning effects. Enjoy fewer UVA rays responsible for photoaging and make tanning safer for the skin.
UVA
is radiation in the wavelength range of 315-400 nm. It is primarily responsible for what is known as an "immediate tan," as it darkens the existing pigment as it passes through the skin. A tan is visible immediately after the tanning session.
UVB
is radiation in the wavelength range of 280-315 nm. It is responsible for the actual tan, also known as "delayed pigmentation." UVB radiation stimulates the melanogenesis process, which is the formation of new pigment in the skin, and therefore results will be noticed later. UVB also affects the synthesis of vitamin D in the body.
Erythemal Irradiance
is a value indicating the ability of light to cause sunburn (for UVA, UVB, and their combinations). It is expressed in W/m2.
Service life
is the length of time until the product is no longer considered effective. Most lamp manufacturers define their guaranteed service life as effective operating time. In most cases, the service life is the time until the lamp provides approx. 20-30% of its nominal output. The time specified by the manufacturers assumes that the lamp is used under optimal conditions. Please note that this is an estimated value and does not exclude individual deviations that may occur due to a number of factors, including the temperature in the unit, ventilation efficiency, etc.
