Disinfection (Chlorine products)

Chlorine is still the most commonly used disinfectant for spas.

The advantage of chlorine is that we can easily measure how much chlorine is in the water, and we know that the water is safe when the free chlorine level is between 0.50 and 1.50 mg/l (=ppm). This is particularly important for a spa, where the water temperature is relatively high and the volume of water (buffer capacity) is limited.

Please note that we can only use free chlorine to combat bacteria and the like; combined chlorine (chlorine that has already reacted with bacteria) is only detrimental, which means the water must be refreshed occasionally.

Before you use chlorine, and during use as well, it is important that the pH value of the water is between 7.2 and 7.4. Using chlorine always causes the pH value of the water to rise (chlorine has a pH of 12). You can correct the pH using pH-.
